Statement
My work explores ambiguity of subjects such as oceans, rivers, landscapes, sometimes a combination of land and water , and figures or animals depicted within a land and water environment.
Photographs, ranging from 60 to 100 years old in combination with sketches and memory and made up environments, serve as a source for much of this work. The history and atmosphere in these photos intrigues me and makes the process of creating these paintings a very rich experience for me. I hope a sense of that will come across to the viewer. Having said that, I am not interested in telling the viewer what to
perceive in my work and prefer their own emotional responses to each image.
I am drawn to subjects with “layers”, either emotionally or actual layers through age or history. I try to convey this feeling through my application of materials on the canvas, such as modeling paste , leaves, soil, etc., acrylic underpainting, mixed media like oils, charcoal, pastel, erasing and building up again.
I prefer to work in series. The process of developing themes for these series takes a fairly long gestating time. Usually I stay with a theme for 5 to 8 years.
Art is most important in my life and I feel that my mixed ethnic background (German, Dutch, Indonesian) and upbringing in Europe contributes to the sensibilities in my work,
